Combine oats, flour, sugar, baking soda and salt in a bowl.

Cut the shortening into the dry mix until it resembles coarse meal.

Stir in hot water to form a soft, slightly sticky dough.

Roll out to about 8 mm thick, thicker than a typical mainland oatcake.

Cut into rounds and place on a greased baking sheet.

Bake at 190C (375F) for 16-20 minutes until golden at the edges but still soft in the centre.
