Instructions

  1. 1

Slice the Spam into strips. Fry them in a nonstick skillet until browned on both sides.

  2. 2

Mix the soy sauce and sugar together. Pour into the skillet and cook briefly until the Spam is sticky and glazed.

  3. 3

Place a musubi mold on a strip of nori. Press a layer of rice into the mold.

  4. 4

Put a slice of glazed Spam on top. Press it down firmly.

  5. 5

Lift off the mold and wrap the nori around the block. Seal the edge with a few grains of rice.

  6. 6

Repeat with the remaining ingredients. Serve at room temperature.

Chef's tips

Wet your hands or the musubi mold with water so the rice does not stick.

Storage

Wrap individually and refrigerate up to 1 day; best eaten fresh at room temperature.

Reheating

Not typically reheated; if desired, warm briefly in a microwave with a damp paper towel over it.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • β€’Packing the rice too loosely, which makes the musubi fall apart
  • β€’Cooking the Spam glaze too long until it turns hard instead of sticky
