Instructions
- 1
Fill a camp coffee pot with water. Bring it to a rolling boil over the fire or stovetop burner.
- 2
Move the pot off direct heat. Stir in the coarsely ground coffee.
- 3
Put the pot back over low heat. Let it simmer gently for 4-5 minutes without boiling hard.
- 4
Take the pot completely off the heat.
- 5
Pour in a splash of cold water. This helps the coffee grounds sink to the bottom.
- 6
Let the pot sit still for 2-3 minutes.
- 7
Pour the coffee slowly and carefully. Leave the settled grounds behind in the pot.
- 8
Serve hot in tin cups.
Chef's tips
Coarse coffee grounds sink better than fine grounds and keep your cup smooth. Pour slowly so you do not stir up the grounds at the bottom.
Storage
Best made fresh; does not store well once brewed.
Reheating
Reheat gently over low heat without reboiling hard.
Common mistakes to avoid
- โขUsing finely ground coffee, which leaves grit in your cup
- โขBoiling the coffee too hard or too long, which makes it taste bitter
