Instructions

  1. 1

Fry the diced potatoes in oil in a skillet over medium heat for about 20 minutes until golden and crisp. Season with salt and pepper.

  2. 2

Mix the cooked macaroni with mayonnaise, mustard, a little diced onion, salt, and pepper. Chill in the fridge.

  3. 3

Brown the ground beef and half the remaining onion in a skillet. Stir in chili powder and beef stock, then simmer 15 minutes until thick.

  4. 4

Grill or pan-fry the cheeseburger patties or hot dogs until they are cooked through.

  5. 5

Place home fries on one side of each plate. Spoon macaroni salad on the other side.

  6. 6

Place the cheeseburger patties or hot dogs right on top of the starches.

  7. 7

Ladle plenty of the warm meat hot sauce over everything.

  8. 8

Sprinkle raw diced onion on top. Serve with mustard and ketchup on the side.

Chef's tips

Layer the food in order: starches on the bottom, meat on top, and sauce with onions last so every bite gets everything.

Storage

Store components separately in the fridge for up to 3 days; assemble fresh when serving.

Reheating

Reheat home fries and meat sauce separately in a skillet or microwave; keep macaroni salad cold.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing everything together in a bowl before serving instead of layering the dish.
  • Using cold, plain baked beans instead of macaroni salad and home fries.
  • Leaving out the meat hot sauce, which gives the dish its classic flavor.
