Instructions
- 1
Warm the milk and stir in the yeast with a pinch of sugar. Let it sit and foam for 10 minutes.
- 2
Mix the flour, remaining sugar, 1 teaspoon salt, butter, egg, and yeast mixture into a smooth dough.
- 3
Cover the dough and let it rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
- 4
Meanwhile, brown the ground beef with onion in a skillet. Break up the meat as it cooks.
- 5
Add the cabbage, remaining salt, and pepper. Cook until the cabbage is fully soft, then let it cool.
- 6
Punch down the dough to deflate it. Divide it into 8 pieces.
- 7
Roll each piece into a rectangle and spoon filling onto one half. Fold the dough over and pinch the edges tightly to seal.
- 8
Place the pies seam-side down on a sheet pan. Let them rest for 15 minutes.
- 9
Bake at 375Β°F for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
Chef's tips
Cook the cabbage until completely soft and let the filling cool before assembling. Hot, wet filling will tear the dough.
Storage
Refrigerate up to 4 days or freeze baked pies up to 2 months.
Reheating
Reheat in a 350Β°F oven for 12-15 minutes until warmed through.
Common mistakes to avoid
- β’Using hot filling, which melts and tears the dough before it bakes
- β’Pinching the edges too loosely, causing the filling to leak out in the oven
