Instructions
- 1
Mix the sugar and water in a saucepan. Bring it to a boil and stir until the sugar dissolves.
- 2
Add the cranberries to the pan. Bring the liquid back to a boil.
- 3
Lower the heat and simmer for about 10 minutes. Cook until the berries burst and the sauce thickens.
- 4
Stir in the orange zest and orange juice. Add the cinnamon stick if you are using it.
- 5
Take out the cinnamon stick. Let the sauce cool so it can thicken more.
- 6
Pour the sauce into a serving bowl. Chill it in the refrigerator before serving.
Chef's tips
The sauce gets much thicker as it cools, so do not overcook it on the stovetop. Fresh Wisconsin cranberries are in season in the fall, making this a great harvest dish.
Storage
Refrigerate in an airtight container up to 2 weeks.
Reheating
Best served cold or at room temperature; not typically reheated.
Common mistakes to avoid
- โขCooking it too long, which makes the sauce too stiff once chilled
