Instructions
- 1
Stir the yeast and sugar into warm water. Leave it for 10 minutes until it turns frothy.
- 2
Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl. Pour in the yeast mixture and oil.
- 3
Knead the mixture for 8-10 minutes until you get a soft, smooth dough.
- 4
Cover the dough and place it somewhere warm. Let it rise for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
- 5
Press the dough down to remove air bubbles. Divide into equal pieces and shape into oval rolls.
- 6
Place rolls close together on a greased tray. Cover and let them rest and rise for 30 minutes.
- 7
Bake in a preheated oven at 220ยฐC for 18-20 minutes. They should look golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.
Chef's tips
Placing the rolls close together on the tray helps them stay soft-sided as they bake into each other. A pan of water in the oven adds steam for a better crust.
Ingredient substitutions
- maida โ a blend of maida and whole wheat flour (denser texture)
Storage
Store in a paper bag at room temperature for a day; best eaten fresh.
Reheating
Warm briefly in a low oven to refresh the crust.
Common mistakes to avoid
- โขSkipping the second resting time, which makes the rolls heavy and dense.
